Amie Gross Architects plays a critical role in Making Room, New Models for Housing New Yorkers now at the Museum of the City of New York (MCNY) based on planning by the Citizen's Housing and Planning Council (CHPC). The exhibition offers new insights into how our changing social, economic and cultural lives are re-shaping our housing needs. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to experience a full size studio apartment designed by AGA. This 325 square foot studio for a single person or couple allows for the range of activities we associate with "home". The unit uses the tools of the architect to create areas of dwelling that celebrate both the active and quiet occurrences of everyday life. The optimization of every square inch in the designed "L" configuration, allows for distinct areas of living, such that this apartment functions as well as one much larger in size. The studio's L shape moves the bathroom out of view and allows for a wide kitchen where full meals can be prepared with ease. We transition from the outside world as we enter our home; prepare and create food for nourishment in the kitchen; cleanse from the day/ night in the bathroom; gather with others in the space for dining and game playing; renew ourselves and our thoughts with sleep and relaxation in the living area; gain knowledge in the study area and absorb culture in the entertainment area. We observe the world beyond our home on our terrace. This outdoor room expands the space of our apartment while increasing the sustainable elements inherent in an efficient space by maximizing sunlight and fresh air through a large window and glass door. The architecture of the Micro Unit reflects the decades of experience in the range of housing types designed by AGA. |
